About University

Universidade de Lisboa (UL) is the largest and most prestigious university in Portugal and is one of Europe’s leading universities. Heir to a university tradition that spans over seven centuries, UL acquired its current status in July 2013, following the merger of the former Universidade Téchnica de Lisboa ( UTL) and Universidade de Lisboa. Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) is a Higher Education Institution, a faculty of UL, and the the largest and most reputed school of Engineering, Science and Technology in Portugal. Since its creation in 1911, IST’s mission is to contribute to the development of society by providing top-quality higher education in the areas of Engineering, Science, Technology and Architecture, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as developing Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) activities to allow it to provide teaching in line with the highest international standards. Its mission is therefore expressed in the three functions which characterize the concept of a modern university: to generate knowledge, to transfer skilled professionals and to transfer and apply knowledge and innovation.

IST consists of 9 departments and is involved in some of the most prestigious RD&I and technology transfer institutions in Portugal, with remarkable impact internationally in many scientific and technological domains. There is about 10,500 full-year equivalent under and post graduate students, and about 1,500 full-time equivalent teaching and non-teaching staff. Internationalization has been defined as a key strategic goal over the past few years with increasing number of international students and staff as well as increasing participation in international academic networks.

 

Role in the project

Lisbon University will be involved in the following:

  • Leading the development of one course and participation in the development of other courses.
  • Participation in all meetings including steering committee meetings
  • Participation to the ToT sessions
  • Participation in dissemination/exploitation events.

ALEXANDRE B. GONÇALVES

  • Alexandre B. Gonçalves

Alexandre B. Gonçalves is an Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade de Lisboa (UL), Portugal. He has a PhD in Territorial Engineering (IST, 2007). He teaches and supervises Geographic Information Systems at IST.
His scientific activity includes research in the areas of spatial analysis, spatial optimization and risk modeling. In the first area he has conducted research on path optimization modeling, proposing a novel model for the location of paths with more than one cell in width, and also facility location problems. He is also interested in applications of spatial analysis in various fields, ranging from the historical analysis of constructions to the spatial analysis of artworks for documentation in conservation-restoration of cultural heritage, and to the modeling of pedestrian-related environment for walkability assessment. In the area of risk modeling he has worked in the assessment of risks related to several natural phenomena.
He is author/co-author of 13 articles published in international peer- reviewed journals (ISI and SCOPUS-indexed), >30 oral presentations in national and international meetings and 8 poster presentations in international meetings, and participated in 7 national and 4 international research projects, 3 of which in the area of e-learning content development.

Dr Ana Paula Falcão is an Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade de Lisboa (UL) where she has been a member of academic staff for over fifteen years. She performs work in several domains of geographic information: acquisition, analysis and visualization and recently get involved in procedural modeling techniques. Working with a research group whose aim is to carry out fundamental and applied research in remote sensing, GIS and 3DGIS.
Concerning remote sensing imagery her main research topic is focused on synthetic aperture radar images and its application to detect ground displacements. Recently she has joined a research team interested in soil moisture estimation using several techniques including SAR images. Related to 3DGIS modeling she is mainly focused in its application to urban areas for urban planning, solar exposure or seismic vulnerability assesses.
In total, she has published 8 ISI papers, 2 international book chapters and over 25 international conference papers and is a reviewer for several international journals. She has participated on 6 successful research projects (total > €900k) funded by Portuguese Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), 3 EU-funded and over 10 consultancy services. Dr Ana Paula Falcão is currently co-supervising 2 PhD students.

João Matos - Lisbon University (UL)

  • João Matos

João Matos is presently Associate Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon (UL). At IST he was co-founder and coordinator of the Master Course in Geographical Information Systems and coordinator of a research group with a scope covering different fields of geomatics and its applications to land planning, natural resources, environment and infrastructure management.
Among his most relevant projects is the technical coordination of the delimitation and demarcation of the land boundary between Timor-Leste and Indonesia, working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Timor-Leste. In Timor-Leste, he was also part, with coordination roles, of projects such as Establishment of the National Geodetic Network and National Spatial Data Infrastructure, National Master Plan and the National School Mapping. In Angola, working for KPMG Angola as Director for Special Projects he coordinated several Municipal Master Plans for the provinces of Huambo and Bengo.
Having published more than one hundred papers in journals and conference proceedings, his scope of activity also covered publications for educational purposes, namely the book “Fundamentos de Informação Geográfica”, first printed in 2001 and still being re-printed and widely used as a reference text in universities from Portuguese speaking countries.
He was president of the Geographic Engineering College of the National Association of Engineers, an active member of the ISO TC211 on Geographic Information, namely as editor of the standard 19131 – Data Product Specification, and awarded with the international award Gago Coutinho in 2008 for his research and application work on land boundaries.
